My father being a fashion photographer, and my Grandfather also being a photographer who captured the devastation of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima Japan. It's fair to say as a kid I grew up surrounded by lenses and camera equipment.
As much as I loved photography - film was my thing. I decided to study computer animation at Bournemouth University, I route into the film industry which was a bit unorthodox and maybe this would enable me to make my own films independently- or so I thought.
I managed to gain experience working in the post production side of the film industry, after graduating, in central London. After spending a couple of years in post and having worked on a couple of Hollywood blockbusters as a production co-ordinator, it was time to move on. Even though this side of the industry taught me some great skills. It didn't feel like it was true film-making to me, in the way that I had imaged.
I knew from that point, that I wanted to be on set... I wanted to meet people, see the decisions that were being made, how certain lights and gear were being rigged, what cameras and lenses were being used etc.
Upon leaving, I tried my best to immerse myself into the film making process, and more specifically within the camera department. I have been a runner, camera assisting DOP's, learning and collaborating with talented Directors and individuals. Just trying to learn and experience as much as possible.
After many years, I haven't looked back. I have been lucky enough to have worked on music videos, short films, commercials, documentaries and have worked with a range of clients, some of which have given me the opportunity to travel to different parts of the world to work for - which was epic! And I have some brilliant memories.
Even though I consider myself a cinematographer - I'm never rigid in my role and will happily fluctuate to any role necessary to facilitate the projects needs. What attracts me the most to this type or work, is that this industry is always moving forward with technology and there are never two jobs the same, you are constantly learning and meeting cool people along the way. I genuinely love my job and can't imagine doing anything else.
If you would like some help on a project, or you have an idea for a film for yourself, or a brand- then please drop me and email or give me a call - and we can discuss what you have in mind.
